Mathieu Amalric

Mathieu Amalric, born October 25th 1965, is a French actor and film director.

After a stint in preparatory classes, Mathieu Amalric drops out his literary studies to join the film industry by the back door: he will successively work as props man, caterer and unit manager. He assists the director Louis Malle on stage, and also works with Monteiro and Romain Goupil. Attracted by filmmaking, he soon directs his first short-films. In 1991, he meets Arnaud Desplechin at the Festival “Premiers Plans” in Angers, while he’s presenting his short Sans rire and Desplechin his feature film La Vie des morts. Sans rires wins the Grand Jury Prize at the Festival “Tous courts” d’Aix-en-Provence, first award received by Mathieu Amalric as a director. But it’s in front of Arnaud Desplechin’s camera that his career starts.

Indeed, almost in spite of himself, Mathieu Amalric is first noticed as an actor: in La Sentinelle, then in My Sex life… or How Got into an Argument for which he receives the César for Best Male Newcomer in 1997. He takes a promising path paved with recognition and awards then: César for Best Actor in 2005 for Kings and Queen, and again in 2008 for The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. He works with some of the greatest directors: Romain Goupil, André Téchiné, Olivier Assayas, Benoît Jacquot, Sofia Coppola, Steven Spielberg, Pascal Thomas, Claude Miller, Roman Polanski, David Cronenberg, Alain Resnais, Luc Besson…

However, his fruitful carreer as an actor never dries up his desire to direct. After several short movies, he directs his first feature film in 1997, Eat your soup. Wimbledon Stage, released in 2001, is a strange and poetic investigation following the tracks of an author who never wrote. In 2003, Public affairs is selected at Cannes Directors Fortnight. His latest film, On tour, is an ode to a beautiful American burlesque troupe that awakes boys fantasies and lifts girls inhibitions. In competition at Cannes in 2010, On tour wins the Award for Best Director.
